Shuvalong Bazar reopens today
A meeting held at Shuvalong army camp yesterday decided to reopen the Shuvalong Bazar today.
The bazar was shut three weeks ago allegedly by the local members of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS) in a bid to take its control from rival United People's Democratic Front (UPDF).
Lt Col Nazmul Haque, commander of Rangamati Sadar Zone, Tarun Kumar Chakma, chairman of Shuvalong union parishad (UP) and Abdul Karim, officer in-charge (OC) of Barkal police station, among others, were present at the meeting.
Meanwhile, police still could not trace out the 13 small traders who were abducted by unknown criminals on Sunday evening from Chilekdak area of Shuvalong union.
PCJSS and UPDF blamed each other over the abduction.
Sources said, joint forces were raiding different places in the district to rescue the traders.
The abductees are Ranger Chakma, Illo Chakma, Ujjalendu Chakma, Rupam Chakma, Moni Chakma, Sadhan Chakma, Kanti Chakma, Alen Chakma, Ajit Chakma, Amar Singh Chakma, Junel Chakma, Purno Bikash Chakma and Kanungo Chakma, said Barkal police.
An armed gang on Sunday evening kidnapped the 13 traders from their engine boat when they reached Chilekdak from Bono Jogichhara Bazar under Jurachhari upazila. They were going to Rangamati town for selling banana, said Abdul Karim, officer in-charge (OC) of Barkal police station.
Both PCJSS and UPDF are active in Shuvalong Bazar area . The rival groups often lock in clashes for control of the market, he said.
About three weeks ago, the PCJSS shut the market and asked locals to refrain from visiting it, the OC said.
