'No criminal can escape trial'
Law Minister Shafique Ahmed yesterday said no war criminal could escape the trial, as the criminals, who were on the run or abroad, would be brought to the country to face the trial.
Expressing hope, he said the people of the country would not vote such persons to power in future who were trying to foil the war crimes trial.
He was speaking as chief guest at a meeting jointly organised by Peshajibi Nari Samaj (PNS) (professional women society) and Secular Unity demanding speedy war crimes trial at Asiatic Society auditorium in the capital.
President of PNS Prof Mahfuza Khanam presided over the meeting, which was addressed by former army chief Lt Gen (retd) Harun-Ar-Rashid, Ferdousi Priyabhashini, Dr MA Hasan, convener of War Crimes Facts Finding Committee; Shahjahan Miah, secretary general of Secular Unity; Afroza Hoque Reena, general secretary of PNS; Barrister Tureen Afroz and Shahin Reza Noor.
Harun said the trial of war criminals was a very important issue for the nation, but it seemed that the government was not giving importance to this trial. “We have to understand that if this trial fails, the entire nation will fail,” he said.
