Jatrabari flyover construction
As the traffic congestion has got well past the critical tolerance threshold, it's some relief to know that Jatrabari flyover is coming up fast. It is likely to be ready for operation in less than 18 months. Without going into the technicalities, works on the massive 10 km flyover that will provide strategic connectivity between Dhaka and 32 districts are progressing in a well coordinated manner. The big congestion of traffic that builds at Jatrabari because of its junctional location will be largely untangled as the city's arterial roads free up in the process.
With the overall traffic situation becoming increasingly complicated, time is of the essence here. More so because costs of Jatrabari project have already escalated, impelling strict maintenance of the timetable for implementation. At the same time, the quality of works cannot be allowed to be compromised in terms of durability and efficiency of service.
The shaping of Jatrabari flyover in good order shouldn't make us complacent; for, there are two other flyovers under construction : Mirpur-to-Airport flyover spanning 1.8 km and the 3.01 km Kuril-Biswa Road flyover. Almost around the same time as the Jatrabari project is completed, the other two are scheduled to be implemented by end-2012. The totality of the impact these three flyovers is likely to have in not-too-distant a future on overall traffic management is going to be considerable. Therefore, the importance of these infrastructure linkages cannot be over-emphasized. Let's also stress the imperative necessity for maintaining the structures well enough through adequate allocations earmarked for the purpose.
One more point: the indecision over monorail routes should be swiftly overcome and the plans for building underpasses now on the back burner should be revived. Simultaneously, the circular waterway project must be revisited as the rivers girdling the city are resuscitated.
