JS body again for open-pit mining
The parliamentary standing committee on power, energy and mineral resources has recommended again open-pit mining at Barapukuria coal mine.
The committee members made the suggestion at a meeting after visiting the coal mine area in September.
Talking to reporters Subid Ali Bhuiyan, chief of the parliamentary body, claimed people opposing open pit-mining were on such a campaign without knowing the details.
“The committee has made the recommendation for extracting coal through open-pit mining after visiting Barapukuria coal deposit, Maddhyapara hard rock mine and Barapukuria thermal power centre,” he said.
Subid said only six to seven percent coal could be extracted through underground mining and ninety percent coal could be extracted through open-pit mining.
