Akinfeev out for 6 months
Russia's international goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev will likely be out for six months after injuring his left knee playing for CSKA Moscow in Sunday's derby clash with Spartak, local media reported Monday.
Akinfeev, 25, landed awkwardly after colliding with Spartak's Brazilian forward Welliton in the 29th minute of the match. He was stretchered off shortly afterwards after failing to recover.
CSKA doctors said they feared a relapse of the knee ligaments rupture that Akinfeev sustained in 2007, but that more examinations were needed to ascertain the full extent of the damage.
Press reports said that Akinfeev will miss Russia's Euro 2012 qualifying matches with Macedonia on September 2 and Ireland on September 6.
Russia coach Dick Advocaat called up Dynamo Moscow 'keeper Anton Shunin to replace Akinfeev in his squad.
