First sculpture on Liberation War in Sylhet
“Chetona 71” unveiled at SUST
“Chetona 71”, the first sculpture on the Liberation War in Sylhet was unveiled last Sunday evening at the north-western site of “A” building on the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), Sylhet campus. Vice Chancellor of the university, Dr. Saleh Uddin, unveiled the sculpture as chief guest. Treasurer Dr. Ilias Uddin Bishwas, advisor of the construction committee; eminent writer and CSE Department head Dr. Muhammad Zafar Iqbal; Dr. Yasmeen Haque (head of the Department of Physics) and Dr. Susanta Kumar Das (Department head of GEE) and coordinator of the construction committee Khurshid Alam were present among others. The sculpture has been designed and created by renowned artist Mubarak Hossain Nripal of Nree School of Sculpture, Narayanganj. The sculpture, in a realistic form, is twelve ft high and has been built on a six ft base. The National Flag on the hand of a male student and a book on the hand of a female student symbolises the Bangladeshi constitution. The figures represent the post-Liberation War generation of Bangladesh. Terming “Chetona 71” an outstanding work of art, Dr. Saleh Uddin said, “This generation will make achievements that we could not, and they will be inspired by observing this sculpture everyday.” The sculpture has been constructed at a cost of Tk 4 lakh, at the initiative of the students of different academic sessions of SUST, and funded by the students of the first batch (academic sessions 1990-91), a first batch student of the university, Khurshid Alam, pointed out. Dr. Saleh Uddin launched a souvenir on the sculpture and a musical programme featuring the band Shironamhin was held later at night.
