Barrister Asim barred from leaving country

Immigration personnel at Shahjalal International Airport yesterday barred Barrister Nasir Uddin Asim, human rights affairs secretary of BNP chairperson, from leaving the country for London.
Immigration sources said they prevented Barrister Asim, his wife Barrister Mehnaz Mannan and two daughters from leaving the country around 4:00am.
Barrister Asim is one of the accused in a case filed for Molotov cocktail explosions on the residential compound of the chief justice on November 18 last year.
He was supposed to leave Dhaka for London by a Gulf Air flight at 5:30am.
Talking to The Daily Star, Barrister Asim said the immigration officials at the airport barred them from leaving the country referring to the directives of the 'higher authorities'.
He said the immigration officials barred him and his family members violating a High Court order given on November 11 last year that asked the authorities concerned not to bar him from leaving the country.
Barrister Asim said he was barred by the immigration officials as he was one of the 70 people listed by the home ministry.
He claimed that the immigration personnel violated the HC order by preventing him from going abroad.
Barrister Asim, however, could not show the copy of any HC order to the immigration officials, told a senior immigration official.
