Retirement age raised to 65 yrs
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday announced that the retirement age of 65 will be applicable for teachers of all the 34 public universities of the country.
The announcement came when a delegation of Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers' Association (FBUTA) met her at her office and placed their grievances. Fbuta President Prof Dr Khandaker Bazlul Haque led the delegation.
PM's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad briefed the newsmen after the meeting.
Only in four universities - Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi and Jahangirnagar - out of 34 public universities, the teachers used to enjoy the retirement age of 65 while in other universities the retirement age is 60.
The prime minister told the delegation that her government attaches top most priority to education sector. She underscored the need for maintaining academic atmosphere in all campuses.
She requested the teachers to give much more attention to research works for larger interest of the nation. “Without fundamental research works, a nation cannot progress much,” she said.
The premier said her government is attaching high importance on research activities.
She observed that researchers should be given special facilities as research works or researchers do not have any specific time limit.
Hasina said despite limited resources, the government is committed to provide special facilities to the researchers.
The government is working to build a modern and educated Bangladesh which will be economically prosperous and environmentally safe, she added.
Finance Minister AMA Muhith, Education Adviser to the PM Prof Alauddin Ahmed were present.
