Bogra Land Grabbers

Cops asked to appeal for scrapping bail

The High Court yesterday directed the police of Bogra to appeal to the local court for cancelling the bail of three people, who allegedly damaged and grabbed land of the Mahasthangarh archaeological site.
The accused are Khokon Sarkar, Sabuj Sarkar and Saiful Islam, who were arrested earlier but were released on bail.
The three appeared before the HC yesterday as per an earlier order.
Hearing a writ petition, the HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and Justice Sheikh Md Zakir Hossain also ordered the police to appeal to the lower court for placing them on remand in this connection.
Superintendent of Police (SP) of Bogra Humayun Kabir, Officer-in-charge (OC) Mokaddem Ali of Shibganj Police Station and OC of sadar Police Station Khalequzzaman appeared before the bench.
They said the police had arrested Khokon, Sabuj and Saiful on charge of damaging and grabbing the land of Mahasthangarh, and had prayed to a Bogra court for their remand.
But the court rejected the prayer and granted bail to the accused.
The bench asked the police to appeal to the HC for their remand, if the lower court rejects the remand prayer again.
The SP said he is unable to discharge his duty as a member of the committee formed by the HC to recommend ways to protect the site, as he is busy with his official work.
The court relieved him of the charge and replaced him by the chief executive officer of the district council of Bogra.
The bench fixed April 6 for further orders on the petition.
The court also directed the police to ensure security of the Bogra correspondents of The Daily Star and the Prothom Alo and Custodian of Mahasthangarh Archaeological Museum Naheed Sultana.
Hasibur Rahman Bilu of The Daily Star, Milon Rahman of the Prothom Alo and Custodian Naheed Sultana on Wednesday appeared before the court and said some people involved in the land grabbing are threatening to "punish" them by filing false cases against them.
