Sylhet businessman killed in clash with students
A businessman was killed in a clash with the students of a private university in the city on Thursday.
He was identified as Muhammad Ilyasur Rahman, 50, general secretary of Madhuban Market Byabosayee Samity.
Police and eyewitnesses said Ilyas and around 20 others sustained injuries in the clash between the shopkeepers and the students of the Leading University which is housed on the 4th floor of the market building.
The clash erupted following an altercation over the parking of a motorbike in front of the Madhuban market in the afternoon, and at one stage, Ilyas asked two students not to park the bike in front of the market.
As it angered the students, they went unruly and swooped on Ilyas causing serious injuries on his head and neck.
He was admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital with critical injuries and later referred to the capital in the evening.
He died as the ambulance carrying him reached at Shayestaganj at about 9:45pm.
Other university students also joined their fellows as other shopkeepers and their staffs took part in the clash.
Police however brought the situation under control after about an hour and picked up three students and one shopkeeper from the scene.
Later two students and the shopkeeper were released.
Detained student Shamim, who hails from Biswanath upazila of the district, was driving the motorbike.
Police filed a UD case last night.
