Murder case against Ruhul Quddus stayed
The High Court yesterday stayed for three months the proceedings of a murder case filed in Rajshahi against nine people including Ruhul Quddus Babu appointed as an HC judge earlier this year.
The case was filed with Motihar Police Station in Rajshahi in 1988 on charges of killing Aslam Hossain, a top activist of Islami Chhatra Shibir unit of the Rajshahi University (RU).
Earlier On April 8, a Rajshahi court allowed a government prayer for withdrawal of the case.
The HC bench of Justice Sheikh Rezowan Ali and Justice Md Habibul Gani yesterday however issued a rule upon the government and the nine accused to explain within a week as to why the withdrawal of the case should not be declared illegal.
The court came up with the order and the rule following a petition filed by Aslam's father Zinnat Ali challenging the legality of the Rajshahi Court order for the case withdrawal.
Babu was appointed as an HC judge by the president on April 11, but he is yet to take oath of office.
Aslam was killed in his room in Nawab Abdul Latif Hall of RU on November 17, 1988.
The same day, Nayeb Ali, a classmate of the victim, filed a murder case with the police station accusing Ruhul and 17others.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam appeared for the state, while advocate Tajul Islam argued for the petitioner.
