Provide women with ICT training to cope with competitive job market
Speakers at a workshop yesterday urged the government to provide women with training on information communication technology (ICT) to cope with the competitive job market.
Although the country has achieved gender parity in primary school enrolment, she still has a long way to go in terms of gender equity, they said and suggested changing the mindset to have a positive attitude to this end.
They were speaking at a workshop on Beijing +15 at the National Press Club in the city. NCBP and Women and Gender Studies Department of Dhaka University jointly organised the workshop.
Salma Khan, chairperson of NCBP, said, "Women in our country still fall victim to violence for dowry, for refusing marriage proposal or amorous advancements. So, we need to talk about the root causes."
Noted writer Selina Hossain, also the executive director of Faria Lara Foundation, urged the government and other organisations to include sanitary napkin or clean clothes in the relief materials to ensure better reproductive healthcare.
During the disasters, women's reproductive healthcare becomes the most ignored part, which sometimes causes infection or other communicable diseases, she said.
Mahmuda Islam, member secretary of NGO Coalition on Beijing Process (NCBP), Nazmunnessa Mahtab, assistant project director of women and gender studies department (DU), Nahid Ahmed, national programme manager of UNIFEM, Ranjan Karmakar of Steps Towards Development, Salma Ali of Bangladesh National Women Lawyer's Association (BNWLA) and Jahanara Haque of Women for Women also spoke.
