More to get BNP axe
Large-scale changes are likely in the 15 posts for vice-chairman in BNP and chairperson's advisory council as most of the "reformist" and "inactive" leaders may be dropped.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will select 15 vice-chairmen as the fifth national council empowered her to do so. She will nominate the 15-member advisory council to assist her in discharging her duties.
Party leaders hinted that a number of vice-presidents and chairperson's advisers would lose their positions due to their "controversial" role during the last caretaker government's rule.
Khaleda Sunday night announced the new standing committee and eight joint secretaries general including many fresh faces who played important roles for the party during the emergency period.
Brig Gen (retd) Hannan Shah, newly-elected member of the standing committee, alleged that those who worked against the chairperson are also in the committee.
Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman, another member of the committee, told The Daily Star that the newly-elected committee will be able to make the party stronger and the chairperson made the right decision.
Another member of the standing committee said massive changes would be made in the chairperson's advisory council, to be announced soon, and most of the vice-presidents of the party will lose their posts in the new central committee.
Officials at BNP central office said the chairperson now has 18 advisers. They are: Maj Gen (retd) Ruhul Alam Chowdhury, Harun-Al-Rashid, Tahmina Khan Dolly, Mosharraf Hossain Shahjahan, Shahjahan Omar, Jamiruddin Sircar, M Morshed Khan, Brig Gen (retd) Hannan Shah, Maj Gen (retd) ZA Khan, Reaz Rahman, MA Hakim, Mushfiqur Rahman, Enam Ahmed Chowdhury, Maj Gen (retd) Mahmudul Hasan, Harun-or-Rashid Munnu, Moeen Khan, Mofazzal Karim, and Syed Hasan Ahmed.
Of them, Mosharraf Hossain Shahjahan, Maj Gen (retd) ZA Khan, MA Hakim, Enam Ahmed Chowdhury and Mofazzal Karim had sided with expelled BNP secretary general Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan during the tenure of the last caretaker government and that is why they might be dropped from the advisory council.
Tahmina Khan Dolly and Syed Hasan Ahmed have not been active in party activities for a long time.
Jamiruddin Sircar, Hannan Shah and Moeen Khan were made members of the standing committee Sunday night.
Meanwhile, the fate of a number of vice-presidents including Hafizuddin Ahmed, Chowdhury Kamal Ibne Yusuf and Osman Farruk is still uncertain, as they are known in the party as "reformists".
Vice-presidents Tariqul Islam, Sarwari Rahman and MK Anwar were elected as member of the national standing committee.
The other vice-presidents are: TH Khan, LK Siddique, Nazmul Huda, Rabeya Chowdhury, Mir Shawkat Ali, Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, Shahjahan Siraj, Nurul Huda and Saeed Iskander.
Of them LK Siddique, Nurul Huda and Saeed Iskander have been inactive in the party activities for a long time while Mir Shawkat Ali resigned about two years ago.
Party leaders hinted that a number of new leaders who were with Khandaker Delwar Hossain during the last three years would be made vice-president of the party.
