Reforms needed to free party of the corrupt
Maj (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, acting secretary general of the Saifur-led faction of BNP, yesterday said reforms are needed so that corrupt people cannot stay at the top level of a party or the administration.
"Time is needed for reforms and about 4,000 councillors of the party will finalise the changes," he said while talking to reporters at his Banani home.
The BNP leader said the party high ups would prepare a reforms proposal, which they all agree on, and discuss it with the councillors.
He said he expects the next general elections to be black-money-and-muscle free. Hafiz said reforms would be implemented in the party keeping BNP chief Khaleda Zia in the process.
"It is not true that we wanted to drop Khaleda Zia from her post. She is the asset of the party... she is the leader of the party and she will remain the chairperson in future," Hafiz said, adding that leadership problems have been solved and the party is under the right leadership now.
He claimed the differences in the party have been removed and the disunity in the party is nonexistent even though a few people are talking against them (Saifur-led faction) for personal gain only.
Hafiz Uddin said they have formed a seven-member committee for preparing proposals on electoral reforms. "We want to prepare the recommendations for dialogue, set for November 22, so that the people become the beneficiary," he said.
"We saw the nomination trade in the past as some people paid money for party tickets. They had no link with the people and the people voted for them as they wanted to vote for the party," the former minister said.
Asked about their position on the war criminals, he said discussion is going on regarding the matter.
Ashraf Hossain, Abul Hossain, Nazir Hossain and Mosharraf Hossain Mangu were present among others.
