Appointment of BERC chairman challenged

The High Court (HC) yesterday issued a rule upon the government to explain within three weeks why the appointment of Syed Yusuf Hossain as chairman of Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) should not be declared illegal.
Syed Yusuf Hossain, former comptroller and auditor general of the country, was appointed chairman of BERC for three years on October 11 and he joined the office on October 13.
The HC bench of Justice Nozrul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Mamnoon Rahman issued the rule upon a writ petition filed by Taslim Uddin, an official of a private organisation, challenging the legality of the appointment of Yusuf.
The petitioner in his petition stated that the appointment of Syed Yusuf Hossain was illegal as per provision of the Constitution, since he earlier held the constitutional post of the auditor and comptroller general.
Dr Shahdeen Malik moved the petition.
