Feud between former, present DU BCL leaders over control of tender
Tension mounted among former and incumbent BCL leaders over dropping of tender schedule in the administrative building of Dhaka University yesterday.
BCL sources said M Builders, a construction firm, could not submit its tender schedule for Tk 16 lakh development work of Kuwait-Moitree Hall and Arts Building as a group of leaders of BCL hall committees allegedly prevented the workers of the firm.
Since Awami League-led grand alliance has been elected to power, a group of former BCL leaders, including Mainuddin Babu, Mizanur Rahman and Meherul Hasan Sohel, started taking control of tender-related activities at DU with the help of a section of present BCL leaders, the sources said.
However, some leaders of recently formed BCL hall committees are now trying to establish control over tender for development work.
The sources said a group of BCL men led by Surya Sen Hall BCL president Sayeed Majumder, general secretary Ziaul Haider Tuhin, Ziaur Rahman Hall BCL president Rifat Hossain Ziku, AF Rahman Hall BCL president Saiduzzaman Faruk, Haji Mohammad Muhsin Hall BCL President Mohammad Ali took position at the administrative building yesterday morning.
A construction firm that had earlier negotiated with the present leaders dropped its tender schedule into the tender box at the DU treasurer's office.
But M Builders, which negotiated with some former BCL leaders, could not drop its tender schedule as the present leaders prevented its employees around 11:30am.
The present and former BCL leaders were also locked into an altercation over the issue.
Ilyas Hossain, younger brother of Mominullah, proprietor of M Builders, told reporters that he could not drop the tender schedule following intervention from the present BCL leaders.
He also said his firm would submit a written complaint to the university authorities on Saturday.
When contacted, Surya Sen Hall BCL general secretary Ziaul Haq Tuhin told The Daily Star that Ilyas is a former BCL leader and nobody stopped him from dropping his tender schedule.
DU Treasurer Prof Mizanur Rahman told reporters that he is now on leave and would look into the matter following any written complaints.
