‘Urban future initiative’ launched
Power and Participation Research Centre (PPRC) has launched an 'urban future initiative' at a workshop in Dhaka yesterday.
Hossain Zillur Rahman, former adviser to the caretaker government and executive chairman of PPRC, a Dhaka-based policy research centre, chaired the meeting.
PPRC research findings showed that the urban population has increased to 29 percent from 7 percent in 1971.
PPRC says 41 percent of urban economic establishments are in metropolises, 42 percent in district towns and 16 percent in upazilas.
Migration dynamics show that around 30 percent of the youth migrate in search of educational opportunities.
The difference in wage between Dhaka and rural areas is much lower than generally believed and an urban woman gets nearly a third of wages for a man, the organisation said.
