Tanzanian Abdulrazak Gurnah wins Nobel Prize in Literature
Tanzanian writer Abdulrazak Gurnah won the 2021 Nobel Prize in Literature, the award-giving body said on Thursday (Oct 7).
The prize is awarded by the Swedish Academy and is worth 10 million Swedish crowns (S$1.55 million).
Mr Gurnah, who grew up on the island of Zanzibar, but who arrived in England as a refugee at the end of the 1960s, was honoured "for his uncompromising and compassionate penetration of the effects of colonialism and the fate of the refugee in the gulf between cultures and continents."
