Lines Exchanged in Silence
"In Your Eyes I See Endangered Me"—Rabindranath Tagore
"I love"—words in the quiet solitude of evening
Flame like meteors across mahogany forests.
An ocean of light tumbles down onto the lawn.
Like a stilled ghost I look at you—enthralled, ready.
I whisper, "Where will fate lead us two?"
You descend from an empty sky; stars dazzle as your hair flies.…
A gentle smile breaks out, white wine foaming, spilling,
Entering earth's cavities. "This evening seems eternal!" you say,
And taking my hand, descend flight after flight down cavernous stairs.
In explosive embrace the intoxicated moon stumbles.
The wide-awake unending evening is silenced; dew gathers, a furnace spouts.
And then danger—despondent, honey-tinged danger!
