Tatee Ghar

Blood red Katan wrapped around a beautiful bride or the burly wood cotton sari worn by the village belle – whichever looks more tempting, the hind-story of handloom or 'Taant' remains the same in both cases. Hand woven saris have many stories of genuine emotions to narrate - sorrow, pain and warmth of the weavers. Artisans do not just weave a sari, with each piece they produce; they breathe life into their creation, crafting cherished pieces of art.

Taant saris are a similar feat by the artisans of Bengal, often woven using handlooms. Today, however, the handlooms have been largely replaced by power looms to meet the increased demand of the ever growing population.

Taant saris are special because of their lightness and transparency; they are woven from special cotton threads permitting the saris to be extra light and comfortable. In fact, a taant sari is perfect for the hot and humid Bangladeshi weather. The story of taant is layered and nuanced, and many fashion houses in the city have tried bringing it to life, and popularising the item to the masses.

'Tatee Ghaar' is a similar and dedicated fashion store at Pink City, bringing in an array of taant saris, from the very simple, cotton variants to the exquisite silk ones. The cotton saris are available in many colours and different thread counts. (The higher the thread count, the more expensive the sari). A typical cotton taant sari at Tatee Ghar costs between Tk1000 and Tk12000. These saris are available in lively and attractive colours like slate blue, spring green, medium orchid etc.

There are separate racks at the store packed with exquisite natural (vegetable-dyed) taant saris in both cotton and silk material. These are available within the price range of Tk7000 to Tk15000. An Indigo dyed sari always looks breathtaking on causal evening get-togethers.

Dhakai Jamdani is also available at the store, in different base colours and interesting motifs, starting from about Tk5500 to the whopping Tk70,000.

At Tatee Ghar, an interesting selection of taant ornas are also available in silk and cotton. These single piece ornas can be stylishly paired with any two piece kameez or single kurtis. Those who are uncomfortable wearing saris need not be upset because Tatee Ghar also stores an entire range of taant kameez (unstitched) for everyone who prefers to include a cotton collection in their wardrobe. The taant kameez sets range between Tk1500 and Tk6000.

So, if you were wondering where to go to buy the next gift for someone, or for that Holud and Mehendi, Tatee Ghar might be the perfect store to visit.
