A court in Manikganj today sentenced five people to death for killing a former union parishad member in Manikganj's Gheor upazila in 2013.
The death convicts are Manjur Rahman (30), Moazzem Hossain (38), Babul Miah (39), Azizul Haque (25) and Feli Begum, reports our Manikganj correspondent.
Shahana Haque Siddika, judge of Manikganj additional district and session judge's court, passed the order in presence of all the accused, said Afsarul Islam Moni, public prosecutor of the court.
The court also acquitted 13 other accused as the allegations brought against them could not be proven.
Lawyer Moni said Ashraf Ali Dewan, former union parishad member, was attack by his rivals with homemade weapons at Fulhara village over land related dispute on June 18, 2013.
Ashraf died while he was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Dhaka a day after the attack.
Later, the victim's brother Mansur Ali filed a case against 25 people with Gheor Police Station.
On May 31, 2014, police submitted a charge sheet against 18 people including the five convicts before a district court.
