Jewel murder in Lalmonirhat: HC rejects bail pleas of 4 accused
The High Court today rejected bail petitions of four accused in the case filed over the brutal killing of Abu Yunus Md Shahidunnabi Jewel in Lalmonirhat on October 29 last year.
The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman passed the rejection order after holding hearing on the bail petitions filed by the four accused -- Md Ashraful Islam, Md Bayezid Bostami, Md Abdur Rahim and Md Helal Uddin.
Deputy Attorney General Sarwar Hossain Bappi confirmed the development to The Daily Star.
The DAG said the HC bench rejected the bail petitions of the four accused following his argument that the killing was a heinous and brutal incident, and the accused were arrested after examining video footage of the incident.
There is no need for specific allegations in such a case the bail petition to be rejected, DAG Bappi also said, adding that the accused cannot be released from jail following the HC's rejection order.
Lawyer Gazi Mamun-Ur Rashid appeared for the accused petitioners during hearing of the bail petitions.
Jewel (50), from Shalban Mistripara area of Rangpur city, was beaten up and burnt to death by a mob in Burimari village over a rumour about desecrating the Holy Quran. A graduate from Dhaka University, Jewel used to work as a librarian at Rangpur Cantonment Public School and College.
