Digital Security Act: HC grants bail to journalist arrested for ‘threatening Kishoreganj DC on Facebook’

Akib Hridoy, a local journalist of Ananda TV from Kishoreganj, was granted bail for six months by the High Court today, 42 days after he was arrested under the Digital Security Act.

The HC bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo today granted the bail after hearing a bail petition submitted by Akib's lawyer.

The state will not appeal against the HC order, Deputy Attorney General Md Aminul Islam told The Daily Star.

Akib (28) was arrested on December 28 last year in a case filed by the then Kishoreganj Deputy Commissioner Md Sarwar Murshed Chowdhury at Kishoreganj Sadar Police Station.

Akib allegedly threatened the DC and expressed resentment towards an executive magistrate and some police personnel on Facebook live, after he was fined Tk 5,000 by a mobile court for not having his driving license on him while he was riding his motorbike, the DAG said.

Later on January 25, the District and Session Judge's Court in Kishoreganj rejected a bail petition from Akib in the case.
