Indian freight train derails near Bangabandhu Bridge
An Indian freight train derailed at the Bangabandhu Bridge west railway station in Sirajganj early today.
A relief train from Ishwardi Junction has been engaged in rescuing the train since 11:00am, our correspondent from Pabna reports, quoting rail officials.
The derailment occurred around 6:30am when the freight train was getting a railroad switch to change track, engine and wagon at the station, said Md Nasir Uddin, divisional transportation officer (DTO) of Railway in Pakshey.
The train carrying railway materials had entered through Benapole and reached the west zone rail station early today; it was preparing to return to India, he said.
Two wagons of the train derailed, halting train movement between Dhaka and the northern and southern parts of the country, the rail official added.
Four intercity trains are stuck at different rail stations on both sides of Bangabandhu Bridge due to the derailment, said Nasir.
It may take three hours to rescue the train, said the DTO.
