India raises Taj Mahal fees for SAARC countries
Entry into the main mausoleum at the Taj Mahal, the 17th century white marble monument of love, will be costlier from today.
Vasant Swarnakar, India's chief archaeologist in Agra, said visitors from SAARC countries will now have to pay Rs 740 to enter. Previously it was Rs 540.
Domestic Indian visitors will have to shell out Rs 250 and non-SAARC foreign visitors Rs 1,300 to see the mausoleum, reports our New Delhi correspondent.
The new ticketing prices are aimed at reducing the footfalls and consequently the human load on the main structure of the Taj Mahal, one of the finest examples of Mughal architecture which is threatened by air pollution.
Visitors who buy the Rs 50 ticket would not be allowed to enter the mausoleum but would be able to move around the Taj and see the rear side, the Yamuna river at the back.
The Taj became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983 and was cited as "the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage.
