Fire kills 2,800 poultry birds in Ctg

Around 2,800 chickens perished in a fire that broke out at a poultry farm in the city in the early hours of yesterday.

An electrical short-circuit sparked off the fire at round 3.00am at the farm, causing an estimated loss of Tk 2 lakh, fire service sources said.

The farm is owned by Farid member of Uttar Kulgaon under Panchlaish thana.

Newsman killed in road mishap

Syed Sajjadur Rahman, editor of a fortnightly magazine, was killed in a road accident at Mohammadpur in the city yesterday.

A speeding people carrier, Druti, knocked him down when he was crossing a road 200 yards from Mohammadpur Police Station at around 12:30pm. Rahman, 50, was the editor of the Procharpatra.

He was rushed to Bangladesh Medical College Hospital and later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead at around 1:40pm.

Rahman went to the police station to collect some information but met with the tragic accident when he tried to cross the road to go to his home at Jafrabad Poolpar in Mohammadpur, police said.

Police seized the vehicle but the driver fled away.

Butterfly showroom looted

Robbers looted cash, eight television sets and other electronic goods worth about Tk 2 lakh from a Butterfly showroom at Mirpur in the city on Wednesday.

The robbers entered the showroom at section-1 after breaking the shutter at about 3:00am.

A case was filed with Mirpur Police Station in this connection.

Police held Lal Mian, a guard for interrogation.
