18 shops gutted in Khulna fire

Eighteen shops at Sher-e-Bangla Market of Terokheda upazila in the district were gutted in a fire on Monday midnight.

Loss of properties had been estimated at over Tk 1 crore.

The fire was brought under control after a four-hour fight by firefighters of Khulna Fire Service.

According to police and eyewitnesses, the fire originated from an electric short circuit at about 2:15am.

Portuguese envoy presents credentials

President Iajuddin Ahmed stressed the need for mutual exchange of experiences in the field of agriculture and other development sectors between Bangladesh and Portugal.

The President said this when new Ambassador of Portugal Joaquim Jose Lemos Ferreira Marques met him at Bangabhaban to present his credentials.

Welcoming Marques, Iajuddin recalled the cordial bilateral relations between the two countries and reaffirmed Bangladesh's determination to further consolidate and develop relations with Portugal.

He also stressed much on cooperation in the field of trade and commerce that will benefit both the nations.

Obituary

Khondokar Abdul Majid, chairman of Khadim Shoes and Khadim Industries, breathed his last here early yesterday at the age of 82.

Born in 1923 at Kazipara of Brahmanbaria district, Majid lived in Kolkata from 1930 to 1952.

In 1953, he relocated his business to Dhaka and was running his establishments till his death.

Majid left behind his wife, two sons, four daughters, 14 grand children and two great grand daughters to mourn his death.

His qulkhwani will be held at his residence at House 94, Road 11/A (old 21), Dhanmondi after Asr prayers on Friday.

Sramik Dal leader held with bomb making materials

Police Sunday arrested a Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal leader in Chitalmari upazila in Bagerhat, suspecting his involvement in making bombs.

Police also seized a lot of bomb making materials from the house of Gazi Atiar Rahman, 45, convenor of Chitalmari unit Sramik Dal, in Kharhom Khali village.

Police and locals said Sabita Rani Mondol, 26, wife of fish trader Gouranga Mondol, was injured in a bomb blast near Atiar's house Saturday.

The bomb was planted there to kill Gouranga, they added.
