Russia World Cup sees first goal

The 2018 World Cup saw its first goal as Russia’s Yuri Gazinsky directs a header behind the reach of Saudi Arabia goalkeeper A-Mayoof.

After Saudi failed to clear a corner properly, forward Aleksandr Golovin collected the ball in the left hand side and curled in a delicious cross. Gazinsky rose high above his man to place the ball into the bottom corner to hand the host nation the lead in their opening fixture.

It took only 12 minutes for the host nation to find the net as the fans who came to the stadium erupted in sheer joy.

Denis Cheryshev doubled the lead for the Russians on the 43rd minute mark. The Villarreal man kept his composure to keep the ball away from a challenge before planting it high into the net.
