‘Saddest day of my career’

Brazil forward Neymar accepted the fact that the disappointing quarterfinal loss to Belgium which ended Brazil's dream of winning a sixth world title was the ‘saddest day’ of his career.

Neymar, at 26 was supposed to bring Brazil their sixth World Cup title at Russia 2018. Brazil had been heavily relient on the moment of inspirations that the star man provided in 2014 World Cup at home soil. After Neymar injured himself in the quarterfinal against Colombia, Brazil went on to lose 7-1 against Germany in the semis. Brazilian fans had to console themselves with the fact that Neymar not playing that game was key to the heavy defeat to Germany.

This time around, the team was less relient on Neymar. Brazil had balance and players such as Philippe Coutinho came good and carried Brazil to the quarterfinal. Neymar was allowed to bid his time and find his best touch after coming back from a metatarsal injury as a balanced team around him learned to play upto the expectations that the Brazil shirt demanded.

Neymar scored two goals and set up another in five games for Brazil at the tournament, but made headlines for play-acting rather than for match-winning performances.

Neymar will be 30 when the next World Cup comes around and as one of the best players in the world right now, he too wanted to play upto his own expectations.

"I can say that this is the saddest moment of my career, it is incredibly painful because we knew we could get there, we knew we had conditions to go further, to make history," Neymar wrote on Instagram.

Brazil's inability to keep their emotions in check contributed to their spectacular implosion at the 2014 World Cup, so the worry was that once again the pressure might prove too much for the Selecao in Russia.

It perhaps proved to be their undoing as even after having some of the best player in the world and a balanced team with various gifted profiles, Brazil once again came up short in the showpiece event. So much were they ‘fixated’ upon their emotions that Neymar said that at this moment it was difficult to keep playing football.

"But it was not this time. It's hard to find the strength to play soccer again, but I'm sure God will give me strength enough to face anything, so I'll never stop thanking God, even in defeat ... because I know that your way is much better than mine I'm very happy to be part of this team, I'm proud of all, interrupted our dream but they didn't get it out of our head and neither of our hearts,” the Brazilian added.

In a further post on Instagram stories, Neymar added: "I am thankful to all of those who sent us messages and who supported us."

In 2014, coach Luiz Felipe Scolari brought in a sports psychologist to help the squad deal with the pressure. This time around Brazil looked like a a side that was mentally tougher. Tite tried to keep a lid on the emotions but during that first half against Belgium, it once again showed that emotion, raw and ready to come to the surface caused Brazil’s suffering.
