Sundarbans fire doused after 30 hours
A fire that broke out in Daser Bharani area under Sharankhola Range of Sundarbans East Forest Division was doused this afternoon nearly 30 hours after it broke out.
Deputy Assistant Director of Fire Service and Civil Defense (Bagerhat) Golam Sarwar said, "We have been able to extinguish the fire in the area. So, we have ended our operation today."
The fire broke out around 12:00pm yesterday in a spot in the forest which is about six to seven kilometres off the locality.
The fire was put out around 5:00pm jointly by the members of fire service, forest department and a voluntary organisation -- Community Patrolling Group -- and locals, reports our Bagerhat correspondent.
Confirming the incident, Mohammad Belayet Hossain, divisional forest officer (DFO) of the Sundarbans East Forest Division, said a three-member probe body was formed yesterday to find the cause of the fire and the extent of damage.
The committee formed by the Forest Department was asked to submit its report within the next seven days, the DFO said.
"There has been no major damage. Fire extinguishing operations were suspended last night. Forest workers and three units of fire service resumed operation in the morning," the official said earlier in the day.
He added that action will be taken if the committee finds anyone responsible during investigation.
