Cyclone Yaas: Rivers swell in Bagerhat, 344 cyclone centres ready
Water level has increased in different rivers of Bagerhat and has inundated low-lying areas due to strong winds and tide as severe cyclonic storm 'Yaas' is lying over northwest Bay and adjoining areas.
Biswajit Vaidya, executive engineer of the Bagerhat Water Development Board, said the water level in various rivers has risen by 1.5 feet.
If the water level increases to three to four feet more than normal, then some areas will be affected, he said.
However, no embankment has been damaged yet, he said.
It has been raining intermittently in coastal areas since Monday night, our Bagerhat correspondent reports.
More than 50 personnel from eight high-risk patrol outposts -- Dubla, Kokilmuni, Shela, Kachikhali, Charkhali, Tambulbunia, Jongra and Jhapsi-- in the Sundarbans of Bagerhat have been asked to move to a nearby safe outpost.
Meanwhile, forest rangers, fishermen, bawalis and mouyals in the Sundarbans have also taken shelter in a safe place, said Muhammad Belayet Hossain, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of the Sundarbans East Forest Department.
A total of 344 cyclone centres have been set up in different upazilas so that people can take shelter during the disaster, said Bagerhat Additional Deputy Commissioner Khandaker Mohammad Rizaul Karim.
The administration has opened 10 control rooms and 85 medical teams and over 1,500 volunteers are ready to tackle the situation, said Bagerhat Civil Surgeon KM Humayun Kabir.
