Acting is impossible without dedication: Fazlur Rahman Babu
National Film Awardee Fazlur Rahman Babu has been a popular name on the silver screen and television for decades. Half a dozen of his movies are currently awaiting release. Recently, the actor spoke to The Daily Star about his upcoming projects, and more.
Most of your films and television projects focus on real-life issues. Have you worked on any such film recently?
Recently, I was outside Dhaka, finishing the shoot for the film, "Khachar Bhitor Ochin Pakhi", directed by Raihan Rafi. It is based on a true story. This is the kind of film that brings an immense sense of joy to an artiste, and I hope to work on more such stories.
You have been acting on television for four decades. There was a time when you regularly did serials. Why do we rarely see you in serials now?
Now, I work on one-hour telefilms. Series or mega serials do not attract me anymore. In my opinion, these days, most of them are of mediocre quality. They are saturated with humour, but have no continuation. So, I chose to not do serials anymore.
You started your journey with the theatre troupe, Aranyak. Do you miss the stage?
Yes, I do miss that life a lot. I think the stage is the place where you learn your most valuable acting lessons. Since I am quite busy filming television and silver screen projects, I cannot do theatre regularly. Regardless of that, I have a deep love for the stage.
You have also made a name for yourself by singing. What do you like being known for – acting or singing?
Definitely acting. Singing is just one of my hobbies. Giasuddin Selim convinced me to playback for the film "Monpura", which was the beginning of my singing journey. I sang five songs in the movie "Ghetu Putro Komola", directed by Humayun Ahmed. However, I prefer the identity of an actor more.
You play all your characters believably. How do you prepare for your roles?
Acting is impossible without dedication. I have spent decades in the industry, and I am still learning. After getting a script, I try to nurture my character in a way that allows me to make it my own. Only then, I stand in front of the camera.
