2000’s comedy ‘Shaolin Soccer’ gets sequel, global talent hunt announced

On June 22, Hong Kong based actor, producer, director Stephen Chow took to his social media to announce the sequel to 2001 sports and martial arts comedy "Shaolin Soccer". The movie will be called "Shaolin Women's Soccer", with more details yet to be revealed.

"Here is my birthday wish," Chow wrote in his caption. "To spend a good time with so many pretty girls (young, beautiful, smart, curvy, ATHLETIC). All countries are welcomed. The more the better!"

The actor also shared a small video with the aforementioned captioned, that showed a glimpse of the script with a female martial artist's silhouette on the cover. 

The original "Shaolin Soccer" film set box office records at the time of release, becoming one of the biggest hits Hong Kong movie industry has ever seen. Over time, the film also made its place among sports comedy fans, becoming a cult classic along with Chow's other hit, "Kung Fu Hustle".

Chow previously directed and starred as the lead in "Shaolin Soccer." The former actor's latest project was in 2019, when he wrote, directed and produced the film "The New King of Comedy," a remake of his classic 1999 film "King of Comedy."
