Mime Art’s fiery tribute to July Uprising returns to the stage today

To mark the anniversary of the July Uprising, the Dhaka-based mime troupe Mime Art is set to stage a special performance today at the Studio Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA). The event begins at 6pm and will be inaugurated by Rezabuddaula Chowdhury, former BNP Information & Research Secretary and past president of JASAS.
The programme will feature recitations of protest poetry from July 2024, an open discussion session, and the third staging of Mime Art's powerful production "Rokte Agun Legechhe" ("The Blood is on Fire"), written, directed, and performed by the troupe's founder, Nithor Mahbub.
The silent play, built around the violent anti-discrimination student protests of 2024, is a wordless yet piercing portrayal of state brutality, collective grief, and resistance.
"'Rokte Agun Legechhe' is more than just a performance," said Nithor Mahbub. "It is a silent scream, a visual memory of protest and pain, and a tribute to those who stood against injustice when others looked away. We want to etch the July Uprising into our cultural memory."
The production is dedicated to all who marched against repression in 2024, especially the youth whose defiance reshaped national discourse.
Faisal Mahmud is assisting Mahbub with direction. The production features lighting by Mokhles, stage coordination by Lemon, and original music planning and execution by Subhasish Dutta Tonmoy.
As part of the programme, audiences will also hear reflections on the July Uprising and witness poetic tributes to the movement's martyrs—fusing performance and memory in a single evening of resistance.
