I want to keep singing my songs for as long as I live: Khurshid Alam

Legendary Bangladeshi playback singer Khurshid Alam, whose golden voice once dominated the country's film music scene, says his fans still request his timeless classics. Despite his age, the Ekushey Padak-winning artiste continues to perform on stage and television with the same passion that marked the height of his career.
"I've spent a lifetime with music," Alam, who is now in his 80s, told The Daily Star in a recent conversation. "I'm still able to sing and what a blessing that is. I'm grateful to the Almighty."
Alam is known for evergreen hits like "Chumki Cholechhe Eka Pothe", "Jodi Bou Shajo Go", "Dhire Dhire Chol Ghora", and "Chupi Chupi Bolo Keu Jene Jabe". He confirmed that these songs remain the most requested during his live shows,
"Even today, the audience asks to hear 'Chumki Cholechhe Eka Pothe' or 'Dhire Dhire Chol Ghora'. These songs have stayed with them, and when I see that kind of love, it fills me with joy."
Though he is best known for singing his songs, Khurshid Alam also pays tribute to other legendary singers during his performances. "I often sing Bashir Ahmed's songs and Subir Nandi's 'Din Jai Kotha Thake'. There's also 'Chena Chena Lage Tobuo Ochena' from "Surjo Konna"—it's one of my favourites."
Reflecting on today's generation of singers, Alam believes many possess genuine talent but need proper mentorship. "We had the guidance of veteran lyricists, composers, and mentors. The new generation is gifted but needs proper guidance."
Now residing in Dhaka, Alam remains active in music. "On May 30, I'll be singing live on Maasranga Television," he shared. "A recent stage show was cancelled, but I'm always ready for more."
When asked about his dreams at this stage in life, the humble singer said, "What dreams does an 80-year-old have? I just want to stay healthy, keep singing my songs, and continue receiving the love and blessings of the people."
