Writer and diplomat Ataur Rahman no more
Ataur Rahman, well known humour writer, diplomat, and former Director General of Bangladesh Post Office, passed away from a Coronavirus infection yesterday. He was 79 years old.
As confirmed to The Daily Star by Upazila chairman and Awami League upazila president, Advocate Iqbal Ahmed Chowdhury, Ataur Rahman breathed his last while undergoing treatment and while he was kept on life support at a private hospital in Dhaka. After his demise, the author was brought home to Nagar village of Dhaka South Union, Golapganj upazila. His janaza was held at the Dhaka South Madrasa ground after Maghrib.
Ataur Rahman retired in 2002 as the Director General of the Bangladesh Post Office. Later, he used to teach in private universities. In addition to 24 published books, Rahman gained wide popularity in the newspapers by highlighting the inconsistency of reality under the headline "Du Dugone Paanch".
He was born in 1942 in Nagar village of Golapganj upazila. His education began under the tutelage of his father, Kabir Ahmad Abul Khairat. After obtaining an MA from Dhaka University, he taught at Madan Mohan College and MC College. He later passed the then Pakistan Central Superior Service Examination and joined the service as a CSP officer.
Ataur Rahman is survived by his wife, two sons, and numerous relatives and admirers.
