A trendsetter in handwriting
Chetana Bikash Model School in Parbatipur upazila of Dinajpur has become a trendsetter by training over 200 students on handwriting.
A total 238 students of the educational institution at Ghanashyampur village have similar handwritings both in Bangla and English, according to the Headmaster Enamul Hoque.
“We established the school on 30 decimals of land in 2015. Initially we had 35 students in class I, II, and III. Their handwritings were so bad that they used to get poor marks in examinations. This disturbed me. So, we arranged trainings on handwriting,” Enamul told this paper.
Five students of the school last year won awards at the upazila level handwriting competition arranged by a local NGO.
“A handwriting expert from Gaibandha was hired who trained three teachers in 2016. These teachers now take the special handwriting classes. Any new student has to go through a one-week long training on handwriting first,” the headmaster said.
“This one-week training is given in February every year.”
The school now has classes up to VI. Seventeen students from grade V appeared in the Primary Education Completion (PEC) examinations last year and 15 of them secured GPA-5, while 18 appeared in the PEC exams in 2018 and they all secured GPA-5.
The monthly fee ranges between Tk 230 to Tk 700 and children of farmers and day labourers mostly receive education here, according to Enamul.
“Students were quite enthusiastic to improve their handwriting when the handwriting care classes were introduced in 2016. Now all of them write in the same style.
“It is quite difficult to find out the subtle differences. All of their copies look alike in terms of handwriting,” said Morsheda Begum, who takes handwriting classes at the school.
Golap Hossain of Baraipara village admitted his son to the school in 2017.
“My son’s handwriting was not good. But it has improved tremendously over the last three years,” said Golap, a rickshaw-van puller.
Jewel Islam got admission at the school three years ago.
“I had to take the training on handwriting for two months. Initially it was difficult for me to ensure good handwriting while writing swiftly. Now I can finish my copies within time during exams as well as maintain the handwriting style,” said the junior high school student.
