'Shootout' continues amid covid-19 outbreak as 40 killed in March and April: ASK
Incidents of so-called shootouts continued unabated during the Covid-19 outbreak with at least 40 persons killed across the country in March and April, the two months in which the country was hit hard by the virus.
The figure was 42 in the first two months of the year, according to rights body Ain o Salish Kendra.
ASK said apart from the 82 people killed in "shootouts" with law enforcers in the last four months, 19 others were killed either in shootings, or while in custody across the country.
ASK prepared the statistics based on media reports and information collected by the organisation.
The death of 55-year-old Shanu Hawlader in the custody of Amtali Police Station in Barguna and 40-year-old Yasmin Begum in the custody of detective branch of Gazipur police created sensation during the period examined.
Besides, 254 women were raped, of whom 74 were gang-raped, and 17 were killed after rape. Six rape victims also died by suicide in the last four months.
At least 127 women faced domestic violence and of them 94 were tortured to death while 14 died by suicide, it added.
At least 54 women were harassed sexually and 91 others were victims of harassment or abuse.
Eighteen Bangladeshis were killed by gunshot wounds and torture by Indian Border Security Forces. As many as 11 others were kidnapped by the BSF, the ASK report said.
