A schoolgirl drowned in a pond at Khaliya village in Mohammadpur upazila of the district on Sunday.

The deceased, Mohua Khatun, was a Class V student of Laskarpur Government Primary School and daughter of Saheb Ali, a resident of Laskarpur village in Sadar upazila.

Riazul Islam, officer-in-charge of Mohammadpur Police Station, said Mohua went to visit her aunt's house at the village with her mother.

Mohua slipped into the pond near the house when she went there for taking a bath at noon.

Later, family members rescued her from the pond. She died on the way to the hospital.
