Mojibar Rahman Mojnu was declared president of Awami League’s Bogura district unit yesterday while Ragebul Ahsan Ripu was declared general secretary of the unit yesterday.
The name of the two were declared as the party formed a new committee for the district at its triennial council on the premises of Altafunnessa playground in Bogura town.
The last council of the party’s district unit was held on December 10, 2014.
However, while Awami League Presidium Member Mohammed Nasim was announcing the new committee, a number of local AL leaders and activists were chanting slogans against the committee. They also damaged about 100 chairs.
Mojibar secured the top post of Bogura AL in the council yesterday after freedom fighter Momtaj Uddin, leader of the unit for the last 23 years, passed away on February 17 this year.
The council was also attended by local and central AL leaders including Jahangir Kabir Nanak, joint general secretary of AL; Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, organisational secretary of AL and also state minister for shipping; and Rajshahi City Corporation Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton.
There were a total of seven contenders for the president post while five for the general secretary post, said several Bogura district AL leaders and activists who attended the council yesterday.
Mokbul Hossain, former acting president of AL’s Bogura district unit, said, “We all agreed when our central leaders declared the names of the new president and general secretary.”
