Dot bangla domain opens for pvt sector tomorrow

The long-awaited dot bangla (.bangla) internet domain is going to open for the private sector from tomorrow, which was previously launched only for the government sector a month ago, said a top official of the state owned company Bangladesh Telecommunication Company Limited (BTCL).

BTCL is running the service and is the technical contact point for the domain label.

On December 31, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina officially launched the .bangla internet domain which allowed web addresses to end with .bangla.

From then BTCL so far received more than 800 applications and a big chunk of that already get new domain, said Mir Mohammad Morshed, a director of the company.

"We are working to transfer our previous .bd internet domain to .bangla and both the work is going simultaneously," said Morshed.

For getting the new domain, uses will have to apply online and pay the fees Tk 500 online as well.

Earlier last year Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) allocated Bangladesh .bangla domain.

The ICANN domain for Bangladesh had been dot bd (.bd) since 2003 and already 36,500 websites use it. Dot bangla was added on October 4 last year.

This kind of domain names makes it easier to identify a certain country's websites, for example; dot UK (.uk) websites belong to the United Kingdom.
