Covid-19 vaccine: Bangladesh envoy to visit India’s Serum Institute
Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Mohammad Imran will be part of a team of top diplomats from South Asia and Latin America, who will visit the facilities manufacturing Covid-19 vaccines in the western Indian city of Pune on Friday.
The Ambassadors and High Commissioners from over 20 countries will visit the production facilities of Indian vaccine-makers Serum Institute, which is manufacturing the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine, and Gennova Biopharmaceuticals, officials said today.
The aim of the diplomats' visit is to give them an idea of India's vaccine-manufacturing infrastructure, they said.
India has the assessment that it has sufficient capacity to meet the domestic demand for vaccines and it can also supply to other countries which may fall out of the global vaccine race, according to officials.
On his return from Pune on Friday, Imran is likely to submit a report to Bangladesh government.
Serum Institute of India has signed a joint venture with Bangladesh government to supply vaccines.
India is one of the largest vaccine manufacturers in the world and Indian pharmas are among the biggest suppliers of vaccines to organisations like UNICEF and GAVI which distribute them to low- and middle-income countries.
India has access to more than three billion doses of the vaccines.
