AL leader Abdul Matin Khasru dies of Covid-19
Awami League lawmaker and president of Supreme Court Bar Association Abdul Matin Khasru died today at Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka.
Abdul Matin Khasru breathed his last at 4:45pm. He was 71.
Khasru, who was elected lawmaker five times, left behind his wife, a son and a daughter and a host of admirers and well-wishers to mourn his death, Md Mohin Miah, personal assistant to the lawmaker, told The Daily Star.
Khasru, a former law minister, was diagnosed with Covid-19 and admitted to the CMH on March 16.
Also a freedom fighter, Khasru was put on life support at the CMH yesterday after his condition deteriorated.
Born on February 12, 1950, he was elected SCBA president on March 11 this year.
In a statement, Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain said he had a very close relationship with Khasru for around 40 years.
Abdul Matin Khasru, chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on law, justice and parliamentary affairs, was a very simple, friendly and good soul. He will be remembered for his outstanding role in establishing rule of law in the country, the chief justice said in the statement.
Law Minister Anisul Huq told The Daily Star that, as the then state minister for law, Khasru had placed the bill for scrapping the black law "Indemnity Ordinance" in the parliament in 1996 in order to clear the way for holding the trial of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman assassination case.
"When we conducted the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman murder case before the courts, Abdul Matin Khasru as the law minister had always accompanied us and provided all assistance and cooperation to us," Anisul Huq, also the then principal state counsel for Bangabandhu murder case, said.
Abdul Matin Khasru's body will be brought to the Supreme Court premises tomorrow morning for his first namaz-e-janaza and then his second and third janazas will be held at Burichang and Brahmanpara upazilas in Cumilla.
He will be buried at his family graveyard in his Mirpur village in Brahmanpara, his personal assistant Mobin Miah added.
He was Member of Parliament from Cumilla-5 between 1991 and 2001.
Although he lost the seat to Md Yunus in the 2001 general election, he regained it in the 2008 general election.
He served in the first cabinet of Sheikh Hasina as the minister of law and justice from 1997 to 2001.
Khasru was elected chairman of the executive committee of Bangladesh Bar Council in 2015.
The following year, he was made the law secretary of AL and also became a presidium member of the party in 2017.
President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, Law Minister Anisul Huq, Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal, Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim, Railways Minister M Nurul Islam Sujan and distinguished personalities expressed deep shock at the demise of Khasru.
