Covid-19: Son ties oxygen cylinder to his back and takes mother to hospital on motorcycle

A man in Barishal yesterday had to carry his Covid-19 infected mother on his motorbike with an oxygen cylinder tied to his back.

A picture of the mother-son duo on the back of a motorcycle went viral on social medial last night, reports our Barishal correspondent.

The Covid-19 patient, Rehana Begum, a primary school teacher, was admitted to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital yesterday evening.

Her condition is better than before, said the concerned doctor of the hospital.

"As my mother's oxygen saturation was going down, I tried to get her admitted to Nalchity Upazila Health Complex yesterday. But a doctor at the health complex asked me to admit her to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College hospital," the son Ziaul Hasan, a senior officer of Jhalakathi Krishi Bank, told The Daily Star.

"I tried to take her to the SBMCH hospital but I could not get any vehicle due to the lockdown. Without delay, I tied the oxygen cylinder to my back with a towel and took my mother to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) on my motorbike in 30 minutes from my residence at Nalchilty in Jhalakati district," he added.

"My mother is doing a little better than before at the moment and she has to be given an injection which costs at least Tk30,000, every day," he said.

"I did what had to be done to do to save my mother," said Ziaul.

"Rehana's oxygen saturation is 95 at the moment. She is being given oxygen and medicine and her condition is improving," said Dr Moniruzzaman Shaheen, assistant director and in charge of the Covid-19 facility at SBMCH.
