Covid-19 surge: BRTA bans motorcycles operating under ride-sharing services
Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) today imposed a ban on motorcycles operating under ride-sharing services to ensure health safety guidelines and social distancing.
BRTA issued a circular in this regard today and sent the directives to the service providing companies, a BRTA official -- wishing not to be named -- told The Daily Star.
The decision came on the day when the authority imposed restriction on carrying passengers in buses, trains and launches. No public transport would be allowed to carry more than 50 percent of their capacity.
The ban on running motorcycles under ride-sharing services will be effective until further notice (two weeks for now), according to the BRTA order.
Other vehicles operating under ride-sharing services were asked to following the government directives, it said.
Total 23,493 vehicles were so far enlisted with the BRTA to operate under ride-sharing service, of which 80 percent are motorcycles, BRTA sources said.
The authority imposed the ban on motorcycles as it is not possible to maintain physical distancing and health safety guidelines, they said. BRTA had taken similar steps last year, they added.
