Two held over selling rice meant for poor
An ex-president of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Projonmo League and his associate were arrested in Mymensingh yesterday for selling rice meant for the ultra poor on black market.
Police also seized 620 sacks (31 tonnes) of rice from their possession, said OC Md Kaium of Armed Police Battalion Muktagacha-2.
The arrestees are Moniruzzaman Monir, 36, the ex-president of the League's Haluaghat upazila unit, and his associate Azizul Islam, 35.
On information, UNO Rashed Hossain Chowdhury of Haluaghat, accompanied by the battalion raided a shop in Uttar Bazar area, where they hid the rice, said OC Kaium.
The arrestees used to sell rice that was meant for the disadvantaged under a government scheme of Tk 10 per kilogram on black market for long, said OC Kaium.
