Scrap Digital Security Act
A group of journalists yesterday staged a sit-in before the posts, telecommunications and information technology ministry at the Secretariat to press home their demand of scrapping the Digital Security Act.
Terming the act an obstruction to freedom of speech as well as the press, sections of journalists under Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) took part in the event.
They brought out a procession from Jatiya Press Club in the morning and headed toward the Secretariat.
Journalist leaders during the programme said they would boycott the posts, telecommunications and information technology minister, Mustafa Jabbar, unless the “worst law in the world” is scrapped, according to a press release.
Ruhul Amin Gazi, president of BFUJ; M Abdullah, member secretary of BFUJ; Quader Ghani Chowdhury, president of DUJ; Shahidul Islam, general secretary of DUJ; Syed Abdal Ahmed, former general secretary of Jatiya Press Club; spoke, among others, at the sit-in.
The much-debated Digital Security Act was passed in the parliament on September 19.
On October 15, editors of the country's leading newspapers at a human chain in front of Jatiya Press Club reiterated their demand for proper amendments to nine sections of the act to protect independent journalism and freedom of expression.
