Saudi-returnee mother abandons 8-month-old at Dhaka airport
A woman, who returned from Saudi Arabia early today, has left her 8-month-old daughter at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport this morning.
The Saudi returnee abandoned her child and left the airport around 8:00am, said Alamgir Hossain Shimul, additional superintendent (ops and media), of Armed Police Battalion (APBn).
Members of APBn found the child crying near belt-5 inside the airport this morning. They fed the child with food from their canteen and calmed her down, Alamgir said.
They also found a co-passenger of the child's mother.
The mother married a man after going to the gulf state and had the child, co-passenger Asma told officials.
But she and her husband separated after a few days. She came to Bangladesh around 2:00am in a flight of Saudi Airlines. The mother thought her family in Bangladesh will not accept the child, Asma quoted the woman as saying.
APBn members are trying to identify the woman from CCTV footages, the ASP said adding that if the child cannot be returned to her mother, they will take help of Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment or Brac NGO to rehabilitate the child.
