Rajshahi University employees lay siege to administrative building demanding easy loan
Three organisations of Rajshahi University (RU) employees laid siege to the university's administrative building this morning, demanding easy corporate loan with low interest rate.
Members of the organisations have been holding a sit-in in front of the building from 8:00am today, reports our RU correspondent.
They have been demanding reduction in interest rate on corporate loans for RU employees from 9 percent to 5 percent and removal of Abdullah Al Ansari, deputy director of the accounting section of the university, bringing corruption allegation against him.
Sabbir Hossain, president of the alliance, told journalists they have been demanding that university administration slash the interest rate to 5 percent for a long time. Vice-Chancellor Prof M Abdus Sobhan also gave them verbal assurances, he said.
But the authorities are yet to take any initiatives, Sabbir Hossain said adding, "We have been forced to wage the protest."
Meanwhile, Abdul Aziz, general secretary of one of the three organisations -- General employees' Trade Union -- alleged that the deputy director of the accounting section is involved in corruption. "He also misbehaved with our employees, when we went to talk to the department over the issue."
Trade union president Nurul Islam Bhutto said, "We will keep the university administration building locked until our demands are met. We will not sit in any meeting either".
Abdullah Al Ansari, deputy director of the university's accounting department, said he would not speak to media without permission from the university administration.
When contacted, RU Proctor Prof Lutfor Rahman said, they have been demonstrating over various issues. "However, it is not possible to solve it right now, we are trying to bring the situation under control."
