Rafiq Azam wins int’l accolade for DSCC project
A landscape design project based in Dhaka city has bagged the prestigious 'DNA Paris Design Award 2021'.
The "Shahid Haji Abdul Alim playground" project in Old Dhaka received honourable mention in the 'parks and public spaces, educational, community and recreation facilities' sub-category for transforming a dilapidated public space into a greenery.
Architecture farm Shatotto implemented the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) project as lead designing body, while two other organisations -- JPZ (JV) and Cubeinside Design Ltd -- were also involved.
Rafiq Azam, chief architect at Shatotto, told The Daily Star yesterday that they got an email from the France-based organisers citing the award's announcement on Friday night.
"The recognition will encourage locals and help ensure the park's sustainability," said Rafiq, who is also lead designer of the project.
Considering the circumstances of the country, it is quite difficult to maintain a public space, Rafiq said. With this in mind, they have formed a committee comprising of locals to look after the renovated playground.
Shahid Haji Abdul Alim Playground project is constructued on an area of 1.33 acres, situated in Lalbagh.
The playground's renovation is part of DSCC's 'Jol Shobuje Dhaka' project, aimed to revitalise 31 parks and playgrounds across the capital city.
The playground project is designed in such a way whereby both greenery development and rain water management is done in a sustainable manner, according to the designing farm.
A trench has been dug under the walkway, which can store up to five lakh liters of rain water for reuse.
In addition, a small, two-storied guardian building has been developed in the eastern part of the site.
The DNA Paris Design Awards are given in five categories including landscape design, according to its official website.
The other categories are: architecture design, interior design, product design, and graphic design. There are a number of subcategories under each category.
It is recognised as a platform to showcase the best and brightest in architecture with an annual design contest and award, aiming to discover and celebrate fresh and creative designs from all around the world.
